Overview

Learners will explore the evolution of Interior Design and develop an understanding of its role and function. They will begin to understand what it means to work professionally in the Interior Design industry and will build a portfolio of current creative and technical skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to perform in the sector today.

They will consider the fundamental elements and principles within a successful design scheme and be able to select, apply and evaluate these with increasing confidence and complexity, in response to interior design briefs. Throughout the qualification, learners will also develop confidence in the key modes of design communication; creative application and presentation, as well as verbal and written expression of design thought.

Assessment and Accrediations

These qualifications are assessed through internally set, internally marked and externally verified evidence produced by the learner in response to a range of assignments.

We will assess every exercise that you will complete after each module and we will also ask you to complete the final assessment. After the successful completion, we will issue a fully accredited certificate.

Course Content

Interior Design and the Role of the Designer

This component will introduce learners to the purpose of interior design, whilst establishing the fundamental elements and principles that are common within a successful design scheme. It will provide opportunities for learners to explore how interior design has evolved over time and consider how socioeconomic and technological factors have influenced this

Using Colour in Interior Design

This component develops learners understanding of colour theory and its physical and psychological significance to interior design schemes. Learners will be introduced to specialist terminology and learn how to describe and identify colours.

They will develop skills necessary to apply the principles of colour theory to the creation of colour schemes that convey mood and space, and build an awareness of trends, including their influence on spatial design.

Exploring Surface Finishes in Interior Design

This component seeks to extend learner’s understanding of surface finishes in interior design. It provides opportunity to explore the characteristics and suitability of materials for walls, floors and soft furnishings. This will include developing understanding of key issues, such as responsible design, healthy living, and legislation, as well as raising awareness of technology and SMART materials in an interior design context.

Plans and Space Planning in a Professional Context

Throughout this component learners will gain knowledge and key design communication techniques, contributing to their ability to fulfil a design brief. It enables learners to produce scale plans and elevations with a high level of accuracy, utilising industry-standard conventions.

Furniture and Accessories in Interior Design

This component focuses on developing learner’s knowledge of the broad range of furniture and accessories available to the interior designer, including style and market level. Learners will gain an understanding of the history of furniture and accessories and the evolution of design in context. They will be able to recognise key design movements.

An exploration of materials and manufacturing techniques will assist learners in the development of design schemes and support the appropriate selection of furniture and accessory products. Learners will explore how to change schemes, evaluating the impact of varying accessories, and will be encouraged to develop their knowledge of suppliers.

Creative Lighting in Interior Design

This component explores the potential of creative lighting in interiors and develops knowledge of lighting design, lighting products and the materials used in their construction. Learners will develop an awareness of traditional and contemporary materials. They will consider how the construction and design of lighting products, and the utilisation of different lamp types, can contribute to changing atmosphere and ambience in an interior space.

Key industry terminology will be introduced, putting this in the context of products and how a scheme can be built using layers of light and functionality. Lighting schemes and technical drawing plans will be developed to industry standards, in response to a client brief.

Professional Practice in Interior Design

The contemporary interior design sector comprises a wide array of creative and technical roles that present a broad scope of opportunities for those wishing to enter and progress through the industry. This component is designed to raise learner’s awareness of the diverse possibilities for professional engagement and career progression within this sector, and to help learners prepare themselves to work successfully in the professional environment.

The component focuses on the development of personal and professional attributes and resources necessary for successful entry into this dynamic and competitive industry, whether working for an established practice or setting up an interior design business. Learners will develop an appreciation for successful professional collaboration throughout the design process. They will also recognise the importance of being able to source and engage effectively with industry specialists and clients.

Professional Interior Design Project

This component provides the opportunity for learners to develop and realise a full interior design scheme in response to a client brief. Learners will draw together their diverse knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course. Interpreting client requirements, generating ideas and developing concepts will be key to the creative process and will be informed by learner’s individual research and understanding of professional practice. Learners will be encouraged to embrace the challenges inherent within the brief and consider a range of alternative solutions, reviewing and refining their work throughout the creative process.

The component enables learners to present a range of work that communicates their interior design intentions in a variety of ways to different audiences, such as clients, contractors and tradespeople. This may include written, visual and verbal approaches, incorporating a mix of media. Learners will reflect on the development of their work, as well as the realisation of outcomes in order to evaluate the levels of success in relation to design intentions.

To be eligible you need to be:

Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course
Starting your course on or after 1 August
Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this
Studying an eligible course at an approved College or training organisation in England. We are an approved College
Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 and above which includes: Access to HE Diplomas, as well as other Diplomas and Certificates.
